dw068 - Bulkrate - Convocation

IkEcht - Songsoverruins (c) 2010
Bulkrate is the alter ego of Evert de Weerd from Deventer, the Netherlands. As far as I can tell he is the second Dutch artist to release an album on the net label Dark Winter. It seems this is a new act, and he gets off on a strong note.

Convocation is, with half an hour and four tracks, a short introduction to Bulkrate, but one that leaves a good impression. It starts off with the eponymous "Convocation", where ghostly synths and sparse, echoing beats go hand in hand. The last track, "Crossing The River", also employs this sound. The two tracks in between are a good deal darker, especially "Into The Portal Of Doom". Funnily enough I associate Bulkrate's sound with several less successful black metal / dark ambient projects, such as Vinterriket. Bulkrate, however, demonstrates how the same ordinary means can be employed to produce a gripping album. Perhaps it's nothing new under the sun / moon, but it's a good start. Available for free from Dark Winter's website!
